DANDRUFF: WHAT IS IT AND WHY DO YOU GET IT

 Overview

Most of us in today's world face the problem of "Dandruff".

Dandruff has become a part of our lives because it definitely comes at least once in a year and that time is a pure nightmare. Continuous itching and irritation on the scalp and don't forget those flakes that fall on our shoulders, a complete nightmare.

Dandruff is a skin condition, mainly affecting the scalp. The skin of our scalp grows too quickly and starts to shed after 2-7 days. The dead cells mix up with oil present on our head and shed in the form of clumps that appear grey or white in color. Dandruff is not good for our hair growth. It makes the hair follicles weak and causes hair fall. Also dandruff is not good for our self-esteem(we can't ignore that).

Causes

Dandruff is caused by a number of reasons. 1.Environmental Factors

The problem of dandruff generally arises during winters. The skin becomes dry quickly and starts shedding. 2. Genetic Factor

It is seen that males are more prone to dandruff than females. The real reason for this is not known, but it's based on experimental observations. 3. Irritated, Oily Skin of the scalp

If you oil your scalp too much and face problems with dandruff then stop doing it. Your scalp produces an oily waste substance called sebum. It is the natural oil that we generally talk about. When you oil your hair too much, the pores get clogged and the skin starts dying. 4. Fungal Infection

Dandruff is also caused by a yeast-like fungus, Malassezia furfur. It feeds on the oil and skin of your scalp. The waste products it makes after it's metabolic activities give rise to those flakes that shed. 5. Sensitivity to hair care products

If you have a sensitive scalp, it might become dry with your normal shampoo. That causes flakes of dandruff. Try to use a mild shampoo and if the problem persists, then consult a dermatologist. Symptoms

Dandruff is not difficult to see. We all are quite familiar with it, but for your information here are its symptoms.
1.Itchy scalp
2. Presence of white or grey flakes on the scalp.
3. Red and greasy patches of skin.

4. Tingly feeling on the scalp. Who does it affect the most?

Anyone can have dandruff, of any age or any gender. But there are some who are more sensitive to it than others.

1.Males

Yes, if you are a male then you are more prone to dandruff. Some researchers think that this might be because of male hormones, but nothing has been proved yet.
2. Illness

If a person is affected with Parkinson's or any brain disorder or even AIDS, they are more sensitive to dandruff than anyone else. What brain degenerative disease does to the brain, HIV to the immune system in AIDS. 3. Age

Dandruff mainly affects people of young adulthood and continues till middle age. Some people might have it throughout their lives. Treatment

There are various treatments available for dandruff.

1.Using antifungal products

Antifungal products help in stopping the growth of fungus on your scalp, thus putting a full stop to dandruff. Antifungal agents like ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione and selenium disulfide have been found to be effective. Yeah, I know you haven't heard about them ever in your life. That's because they are medicinal and only a doctor can recommend you those. You can buy those in your nearest pharmacy and use them according to the steps mentioned on the pack. 2. Coal Tar

If you use that, it helps in shedding the dead skin cells of your scalp and slows the growth rate of the scalp cells. Does dandruff need a doctor?

In most cases we don't need a doctor. But if the problem prolongs and doesn't end then you can consult a dermatologist. If you feel that your scalp is too itchy or tingly or you see too many red spots on your scalp then you should consult a doctor, because our old dandruff might be leading to a bigger problem. Conclusion

Dandruff is not something you like to live with. The itching and irritation that we continuously feel is just too much to take. And when we are out and those flakes fall on our shoulders, that's so humiliating.
