Overview
Most of us go through a phase where we have those bulging red pimples all over our cheeks and sometimes on our forehead too. Pimples are generally confused with acne. But let me tell you both are different.
Acne is a disease whereas pimples are it's symptoms. The main problem is Acne and that's what we need to learn about.
Acne is a disease whereas pimples are it's symptoms. The main problem is Acne and that's what we need to learn about.
Why do Acne happen?
We all know that we have sebaceous glands below our skin. These glands are connected to the pores on our skin by a thin tube like structure called follicle. Follicles generally have growth of thin hair that comes out of the skin surface.
The glands produce an oily substance called Sebum whose main function is to prevent your skin from being extra dry. When the sebum and dead skin cells clump together they clog the pores on our skin. The clump acts like a plug in which bacteria starts to grow that causes inflammation, leading to red pimples.
The bacteria responsible for pimples is Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes. When a person bursts or touches the pimple the bacteria spreads to other parts of the face causing more pimples.
Causes of Acne
The real cause of acne is more secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands. When more sebum is produced and clogs the pores, bacteria attacks, that causes inflammation.
So the main reason for acne is overactive sebaceous glands. This might occur because of the following reasons.
1. Hormonal changes in body.
Most people start having pimples when they hit puberty. That is the basic example where hormonal changes trigger pimples. Other situations where people can have pimples are pregnancy or menstrual cycle.
2. High Humidity
Yes environmental changes can also cause pimples, especially high humidity. When the environment is humid the bacterial growth is more easy as they grow well in humid conditions.
3.Squeezing, Picking or Bursting Existing Pimples
This is the main reason why your pimples don't end. You have one pimple and by picking it again and again you spread the bacteria all over your cheek causing more pimples.
4.Makeup Products
Oil based make-up products also cause pimples. They make your skin too oily thus causing pimples. Normal makeup products also clog your pores. If you use too much make-up and have too many pimples then stop using makeup for well being of your skin.
5. Medicines
Some medicines like steroids cause hormonal disbalance in your body, causing pimples. Corticosteroids and anabolic steroids are some of them.
Prevention of Acne
Acne can be prevented. There are various precautions you will have to take to prevent those nasty pimples. You will have to take self care to prevent or keep them manageable. Here are some tips.
1.Wash your face
Wash your face with a mild(neither too strong nor too weak) face wash or cleanser every 4-5 hours. Wash your face with simple water after every few hours and dry it with a soft towel.
2.Avoid Dairy Products
Cut on the daily intake of chocolates, milkshakes, confectionery and even milk if you want to get rid of those pimples.
3. STOP TOUCHING THOSE PIMPLES!
If you don't stop touching or bursting them they won't go away. I think you can have that much control over your hand that you don't touch them every few minutes.
4.Avoid Using Makeup
Please stop using makeup on your already inflamed skin. I suggest that if you have pimples then don't try to cover them up using makeup, rather try to get rid of them. If it's necessary for you to wear makeup then avoid oil based products.
