High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition when your blood pressure is elevated from normal level to higher, more dangerous levels.

Blood pressure is measured by measuring the pressure of blood when your heart pumps blood(systolic) and the pressure in your arteries between heart beats (diastolic). The first number in the blood pressure reading signifies the systolic pressure and the second number indicates the diastolic pressure.

When is your Blood Pressure high?

Your normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg (millimetre of Mercury) or slightly lower than this. In this 120 is systolic blood pressure and 80 is diastolic blood pressure.

You have elevated blood pressure when the systolic blood pressure is between 120 to 129 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure is 80 or less than 80 mm Hg.

In Stage 1 hypertension the systolic level is between 130 to 140 mm Hg and diastolic is 80 to 90 mm Hg.

In stage 2 hypertension the systolic level is 140 mm Hg or higher and diastolic is 90 mm Hg or higher.

In Hypertension crisis the systolic level becomes more than 180 mm Hg and diastolic level becomes more than 120 mm Hg.
