CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE

 Overview:-

Coronary artery disease is a condition in which the coronary arteries become clogged. Coronary arteries are those arteries that supply blood to the muscles of the heart.

Like any other organ in the body, heart muscles also require continuous supply of blood. This blood is supplied with the help of coronary arteries. When these arteries get blocked due to plaque or blood clots, it leads to atherosclerosis. This leads to narrowing of the blood vessels. Arteries which are naturally flexible become stiff. This cuts the supply of blood to the heart leading to chest pain(angina) or heart attack.

Causes

Coronary artery disease can be caused by a variety of factors.
These can be severe health conditions or simply your sedentary and careless lifestyle. These include.
1.Smoking
5. Excessive Alcohol consumption

Because of various factors the inner walls of arteries start to get covered with fats and cholesterol deposits. This makes them narrower. After some time, when the plaque growth is too much, the blood supply to the heart starts getting reduced. That's when you start seeing the symptoms. Sometimes you don't have any symptoms until a heart attack itself.
Coronary artery disease generally starts at a young age and continues to grow until a very old age.

Symptoms

Symptoms of coronary artery disease vary from person to person.
Some people start seeing symptoms because of atherosclerosis itself, but some don't have any symptoms until it's too late. Here are its symptoms.
1.Chest pain(Angina)
2. Pressure on chest
3. Fatigue
4. Nausea
5. Shortness of breath
6. Heart palpitations
7. Irregular heart rhythm
8. Dizziness
9. Weakness
10. Sweating
11. Heart attack

Risk Factor

There are various risk factors for the coronary artery disease. These include health disorders as well as lifestyle habits. The major risk factors for coronary artery disease are as follows.

1.Age
Your arteries get cholesterol deposits with age and that may lead to atherosclerosis and ultimately coronary artery disease.

2. Family history
If you have a family history of coronary artery disease then you are really at risk of getting it too. Even a family history of heart diseases can lead to coronary artery disease.

3. High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure can lead to narrowing and hardening of blood vessels. It leads in thickening of blood vessels that lead to coronary artery disease.

4. Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of any heart and lung disease by 75 percent in a person. If you inhale the fumes, you are really at risk of getting coronary artery disease.

5. High cholesterol
High cholesterol level leads to atherosclerosis. When the level of LDL becomes high in your body it start depositing in the coronary arteries leading to coronary artery disease.

6. Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is directly linked to increased risk of getting coronary artery disease.

Prevention

Coronary artery disease can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes like any other disease. These changes can include.

1.Quit smoking
2. Reduce your alcohol consumption
3. Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol controlled
4. Exercise daily
5. Avoid food with trans and saturated fats
6. Reduce and manage your stress levels
7. Maintain a healthy weight
8. Keep your diabetes checked
9. Eat whole grain foods
