CONTROL OF DIABETES THROUGH FLAXSEED (ALSI)

Benefits of Alsi or Linseed/ Flaxseed

Introduction

Flaxseed or Linseed ( scientific name: Linum usitatissimum , hindi: "Alsi") is a food and fiber crop cultivated in the cooler regions of the world.
It occurs in basic 2 varieties, Golden Flax and Brown Flax. Golden Flax is low in omega-3 fatty acids, while Brown flax is rich in it. It is rich in minerals, nutrients, saturated fatty acids and a lot of fibre. They are basically rich in thiamine, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.

Flax seeds have been used in Indian households for ages. Indians make "alsi laddoos" and consume them throughout the winter season as they are known to provide heat to the body and also improve the immunity. Stronger immunity helps in fighting various diseases.

Flaxseed is also known to control the blood sugar level and cholesterol in the body. It helps in controlling the blood sugar levels of the body in Type 2 diabetic patients. Type 1 diabetic patients need a daily dosage of insulin to stay alive. To read more about diabetes click here.

How does it work?

Flaxseed are very rich in fibre.
They are a great source of mucilaginous ( gum-like) fibre that can control the amount of glucose in your blood and LDL or bad cholesterol in your body.

Researchers have found out that the insoluble fibre present in linseed or flaxseed slows down the release of sugar in the blood, thus preventing a spike in the blood glucose level of the body.

If a person consumes 10-20 grams of flaxseed powder daily for a month, his blood sugar levels decreased about 20 percent. If a person consumes 50 grams of linseed powder for four weeks, his blood glucose level reduces by 27 percent. This helps in preventing spike in blood glucose level that leads to stroke or coma or even death.

Side Effects

Linseeds are beneficial for your body, they are like a blessing to a body full of flaws. Flaxseeds are non toxic and have almost zero negative side effects to the body. But if you are allergic to them then you can't use them.

Linseed oil has been used for culinary purposes for ages and is considered safe for human consumption. But again, overdose of anything is harmful. Like many common foods, flax contains small amounts of cyanogenic glycoside, which is nontoxic when consumed in typical amounts, but may be toxic when consumed in large quantities, so avoid overdose please.

If you are using them for the first time and have any side effects, then stop consuming them immediately and consult a doctor.
